What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I have learnt to use Garageband and have used it enough to create a track from scratch, portable microphones, and furthered my skills in using Apple Mac computers.
How did you attract/address your audience?
I address the audience in a friendly and welcoming way to make them feel at home. I will have to make sure the guests are people that young people can relate to so they will have to have a good knowledge of up and coming music and artists and be interesting and original and have a good track available to play. The language used will have to be suited for younger people so this allows presenter and guest alike to use slang words.
Who would be the audience for your media product?
My target audience will be people of a young generation so 14 - 30. This is because it is based around new beats and music that this generation have been brought up with. These genres include drum&bass, hip hop and jungle.Because of this I will have to make sure the guests are people that this target audience can relate to so they will have to have a good knowledge of up and coming music and artists and be interesting and original and have a good track available to play. The language used will have to be suited for younger people so this allows presenter and guest alike to use slang words.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I think that the BBC would distribute my media product. This is because they have the 1Xtra section of the radio station. This brings out new and experimental beats just as I feature in my show. It has no swearing in which means the BBC would have no objections to it and it has a reasonably large target audience meaning it will bring in plenty of listeners.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My media product represents the young generation of listeners. This is because guests on the show are role models for people in the struggle so can relate to the poor social class people in providing inspiration in the interviews. The music also relates to all of the younger generation as the beats are new unique and all about expressing yourself which is what this generation is all about. The beats featured can be heard at party's as well as just songs to be on-the-go to everyday. This means the social groups will be young adults and teenagers, poor and rich.
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
It follows a very similar layout to shows of the same genre and style. I challenged the experimental side of things by expanding the guidelines of the genres by incorporating influences from other genres but applying them to experimental and D&B styles.
The dialogue I kept the same in the way they talk with a bit of slang and up to date accent and words to keep the young target audience feel involved and to help them relate to the show.
I kept the layout the same in the intro being a catchy long beat that has voice effects building up to the host talking.
I then applied a breakdown before the talking adding suspense and variety in the atmosphere and makes the audience alert at all times as they don't know what to expect happen next.

Evaluation

I think there are 2 main points that i would improve on if I had another chance to do this.
  1. The first point is that when recording the voices and conversation I would use a better quality microphone and record the interview in one take to make sure there are no button sounds at the start and end of each cut.
  2. The second point I would improve on is that I would use a programme that would be better at letting me record beats through a beat mixer as Garageband has a slight delay when using the keyboard to create a beat. This meant it was difficult for me to produce an original beat.

On the positive side I am quite pleased with what i have produced and think I have used a variety of volume levels, sound effects and transitions.

(Megaphone Effect): Welcome to Garagebeats FM
(Radio Countdown Effect): 3...2...1

(Host): Hello and welcome to Garagebeats FM. This is your host Evan Laframboise. Here with us today is MC Payn known worldwide for his experimental beats.
(Guest): Yo yo yo!
(Host): How’s it going?
(Guest): Yeah sweet man sweet.
(Host): Always good to hear. Now I’ve reason to believe you’ve been working on an album, with some pretty big names. Any chance of revealing a few people?
(Guest): The album’s out next month so I’m afraid you’re going to have to wait until then. I’ve brought in a taster to show you what it’s all about.
(Host): Alright you heard it here first on Garagebeats FM!

Exporting

To export my finished product I did the following things...
  • On the top bar of Garageband there is an option of 'share'
  • When clicking on this it brings up a drop down menu that has the option of 'Export Song to Disc'
  • Following this it opens up a box titled 'Export Your Song to Disc'
  • Where it says 'Compress Using' i selected the option 'MP3 Encoder'
  • Under the 'Audio Settings' i chose 'High Quality' to produce the best sound quality
  • On the bottom right of the box it says 'Export'
  • When clicking it it will ask you where to put the file and I selected my pen drive in order to move it onto a PC.

How I Put It Together #2

  • After sorting out the basics I was then able to add things such as sound effects.

  • To do this I had to click on the eye button on the bottom left of the screen as shown below.

  • This brings up a drop down menu with all sounds and effects. When searching through i found radio sounds and booms that were very useful for creating the radio station atmosphere to the project. I used one just before I started the show and it counted down from 3 to 1 and then added a little drum beat the faded out allowing a smooth transition from just music to talking with quiet music. I used the boom at the very end as I faded out the guests track and then added the boom which was an fade in and then a few low beats into one loud beat that echoed and fades out giving a clear end to the show.

How I Put It Together

I made the project using Garageband on a Mac computer.
  • First of all i had to open the Garageband programme on the desktop.
  • Then you click on open a new project.
  • This will bring up a new blank project.
  • To insert a new track you click on 'track' at the top of the programme. This will bring up a drop down menu. There will be an option saying 'new track' this will insert a new track to your project. There are 2 options of what type of track you want. There is one that is a real instrument track that lets you record any instruments on the programme or records your voice or real instrument through a microphone. The other option is the sample track. This lets you insert loops that are pre-recorded onto the system. It will also let you add sound effects and music.
  • When making the jingle I used the sample track and inserted drum loops accompanied by a track underneath it with string instruments and also another track with a bass line.
  • To alter the levels of volume there is a button with an arrowhead pointed downwards next to the name of the track. This will bring out a volume level on the actual track which then allows you to drag the volume higher and lower in the places necessary. This meant I could leave it reasonably loud until the presenter and guest come in which meant I had to reduce the volume at this point until it was just loud enough to hear with speaking but not too loud that it would distract the audience. I made sure that the volume gradually decreased so that it would sound a lot smoother than suddenly becoming very quiet.
  • After altering the sound levels for the sounds in the background I then focused on the talking over the top. I used a microphone and went into a quiet environment to get the clearest recording without background noise. I then interviewed my guest and recorded the conversation. I then imported the clip onto a new 'real instrument' track and altered the volume to make sure it wasn't too loud or distorted.

Applications Used

The main programme I was using was Garageband and this provided everything I needed to make the finished product.
Garageband has many editing capabilities that allow the user to move around levels of sounds appropriately and also create smoothe transitions between clips such as fades in and fades out.
The programme comes complete with samples of sounds and loops so I was able to compose my own and use some pre-recorded sounds to create a unique jingle and sound effects.
I could import songs from iTunes and also take the recorded sound clips of the interviews from a microphone straight onto the track which meant i could edit the sound levels of that and also apply voice effects to fit in with the show. It is also possible to use the microphone on the Mac to record straight onto the track which meant you could get the timing exact with the track rather than recording it somewhere else and then have to drag it and edit it to fit.

Radio1 Jingle

Radio1 Bobby Friction and Nihal Show – It begins with radio effects that then goes into voices talking about Radio 1 reviewing the new music around and then tells you about a show similar to this to broaden your horizons on this type of music.
It has a very happy style of background music as it is upbeat and has a major melody scale.
The DJ’s then introduce the show and state what song is about to go on and the number to call with any queries about the show.

1Xtra Jingle

1Xtra Westwood – It begins with the 1Xtra introduction stating that 1Xtra brings you the newest tracks. It then goes into an echoed voice effect saying “Westwood Come Out And Play. It then goes into a hip hop mixtape of the biggest records at the moment. It finishes off with the repeated Westwood echoed voice. Westwood then comes on and introduces his show with a very low in volume backing track. It is hardly heard when he starts talking.
There is a massive contrast in volume and tempo from the introduction into Westwood introducing his own show.
He adds an effect to his voice that makes it sound as if he is in a huge hall and his voice rings out for miles. It also makes it seem that bit louder than without an effect.

1Xtra Jingle

1xtra MistaJam Show – This is a very repetitive jingle. At the start it introduces what the show is all about so the audience can be prepared for what is about to be played.
It states that you should trust them to bring you the best new music around the world at the moment so you know that they are a very good station as they look into all the new upcoming artists.
The volume of the jingle is quite loud this means that it is clearer for the audience to hear.
It states the times of the show so if you are interested in what the show plays then you know when the next show is on without having to research it.
It is quite a high paced intro and goes into a drum and bass background whilst MistaJam is talking. It is the start of a song and the volume starts off low until he has finished introduces the show and the record about to be played. The volume then increases.
